Diesel, is the number of cylinders for better working culture, perfectly matched the rated speed, motor turbo, interstage cooler air, 12V typical starter, 6V, charging alternator, lighting rather typical, PTO plus, no emergency brake assist, disc brakes, wet, heavy tractor, well come true in a big farm, long, bulky, wide stance, 2WD, hydrostatic control, synchronized gearbox, average number of gears forward as a model similar class, backward rather average.
I had an old 4620 with a 158 loader several years back. That heavy duty frount axel was nice for moving/loading big bales, not like a MFWD but much better than breaking the little spindles on a 4020 or similar other brand tractors. Take the loader off a 4620 is big enough to field work with duals, and could still row crop (not the nimblest thing) if needed. Stick with factory cab, (roomy cab but dirty and noisy by todays standards.) stay away from evaporative coolers. Not a bad tractor in its day.
The 4620 had an intercooler that most M&W turbo conversions on 4020s didn’t have. Then the 4620 had much larger radiator (big frame tractor ) and fan and much larger oil pan. I’ll assume pistons in the early factory turbo’d JD’s were also oil cooled. Someone else can probably give turbo dimensions on 4620 which is probably larger than the usual M&W turbo also.
A 4620 is good tractor the early 4520’s had some problems but the 4620’s did not. It is a much heavier tractor than a 4320 which is great for tillage the front end is much heavier alot of 4320’s have twisted up front ends. More cooling than a 4320 if you turn up the fuel it won’t run hot. 4620’s have a factory intercooler. The power shift makes it somewhat rare, most had syncro trans. Now the bad part 4620’s only have 1000 rpm pto. We have a late 4520 with all the 4620 updates and really like it. It is our big tractor for tillage and a forage harvester.
Buddy of mine has a 4620, I’ve used it to haul grain in from the field one Fall with pairs of gravity boxes. This model is a LOT more than a 4020 in physical stature and weight. Seems they had put fluid in the rear tires as well.
